Adam and Lily fall in love and marry in 1951 and move into a cozy cabin atop a hill overlooking a peaceful, secluded Deer Lake in the mountains near Sunrise, South Carolina. The young couple is separated when Adam is called to serve in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.
Lily gives birth to their daughter, Rose, and is devastated when she receives news that Adam has been killed in action. She leaves the cabin with her toddler daughter, never to speak of her beloved home or of her true love. Although she remarries, her heart belongs to Adam.
Upon Lily's death four decades later, Rose discovers the cabin and learns of the father she never knew. Through her mother's diary and her father's love letters sent during the war, Rose finds her true identity and discovers the timeless love of her parents, and Rose comes to terms with her grief of having lost them both as well as having lost her own son, killed in action during the Persian Gulf War.
Rose falls in love with Robert, who had grown up spending summers at this lakeside cabin with his parents and a childhood friend, and who has returned from New York to this idyllic place from his youth to finally deal with the death of his friend, who had been killed in action during the Vietnam War.
